Tasmania Private School Fees 2026: Hobart, Launceston and the North-West Compared

Tasmania Private School Fees 2026: Hobart, Launceston and the North-West Compared

The most expensive private school in Tasmania that publishes its 2026 fees is The Hutchins School: $26,020 for Year 7 once its compulsory technology levy is added. Fahan School ($24,395), St Michael's Collegiate ($23,680) and Launceston Church Grammar ($22,310) complete a top four. After them the price falls to $14,855, then to a broad band of Christian and Catholic colleges between $3,450 and $7,880. We checked all 25 schools below against each school's own 2026 fee schedule in October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • 25 Tasmanian private schools publish a 2026 Year 7 fee, from $3,450 (St James Catholic College, Cygnet) to $26,020 (The Hutchins School). The middle school of the 25 charges $6,296.
  • The top four are all $22,000 or more, three in Hobart and one in Launceston. The fifth, Tarremah Steiner, is $14,855. Nothing else is above $9,000.
  • Tuition is not the bill. Launceston Church Grammar's $17,845 tuition becomes $22,310 with its compulsory levy, 25% more. At Peregrine School, levies are 41% of the bill.
  • Six years is the real number. Years 7 to 12 at Hutchins add up to $156,280, nearly six times the $26,660 at Marist Regional College in Burnie.
  • 12 of the 25 schools stop at Year 10. If your child starts at one of them, price Years 11 and 12 as a second decision now.

Fees below are for a first child in Year 7, domestic day student, before any sibling or early-payment discount. "Compulsory total" is tuition plus every levy the school charges all students. Where a school charges one all-in fee, the two columns are the same thing.

Hutchins and Collegiate print their fees per term; the figures above are the four terms added together. Levies counted per family (capital levies, P&F levies) are included once, as they would be for a family with one child at the school.

Three more schools sit outside the tables because their schedules don't give a full 2026 Year 7 figure. Geneva Christian College in Latrobe charges a flat $4,000 a year in tuition, with camps and excursions billed separately. St Patrick's College in Launceston now shows only its 2027 tuition: $5,280, one rate for Years 7 to 12. Guilford Young College teaches only Years 11 and 12, at a single fee of $6,500.

Schools to ask directly

Three well-known schools don't put a readable 2026 schedule on their public website. If you're comparing them, ask the school for the full schedule, including levies:

  • The Friends' School, North Hobart, links its 2026 fees through its parent portal. Ask the enrolments office.
  • Scotch Oakburn College, Launceston, sends its schedule after you fill in a short form on its website.
  • St Aloysius Catholic College, Kingston: contact the college office.

The real six-year bill

A Year 7 fee is a poor guide to what you will spend, because most schools charge more as students move up. We added each school's own year-by-year compulsory fees from Year 7 to Year 12. Only schools that publish a fee for every one of those years are included.

Three things stand out:

  • At the top end, the climb is small. Hutchins goes from $26,020 in Year 7 to $26,060 in Year 12. Most of the bill is decided on day one.
  • St Michael's Collegiate is not in the chart because its technology levy for the senior years isn't itemised. Its tuition alone over six years is $145,820.
  • Fees don't always peak in Year 12. At Fahan, Year 10 is the most expensive year ($26,240), because the Year 10 managed-device levy lands then. At St Mary's College, Year 9 and 10 tuition ($7,440) is higher than Year 11 and 12 ($6,690).

Tuition is not the bill

The single most common mistake in comparing Tasmanian schools is putting one school's tuition next to another school's all-in figure. Here is how far apart they can be:

SchoolTuitionCompulsory totalLevies on top
Launceston Church Grammar$17,845$22,310$4,465 (+25%)
Tarremah Steiner$11,884$14,855$2,971 (+25%)
Peregrine School$5,120$8,735$3,615 (+71%)
MacKillop Catholic College$5,320$6,425$1,105 (+21%)
The Hutchins School$25,180$26,020$840 (+3%)

Ten of the schools in our tables charge one all-in fee, which makes them easy to compare. For everyone else, ask for the "compulsory total" line, not the tuition line. Some schedules also hide a worked example: Launceston Christian School's "1 Year 7 student $6,100" already includes a $240 Chromebook levy that covers Years 7 and 8.

Twelve schools stop at Year 10

Almost half of Tasmania's private schools with a published fee run to Year 10 only, including Dominic, Sacred Heart and Mount Carmel in Hobart, Newstead Christian in Launceston and Devonport Christian on the North-West coast. That shapes the decision in two ways:

  1. You will choose again at Year 11. In the south, Guilford Young College is the Catholic Years 11 and 12 college ($6,500 in 2026). The other routes are a government senior college or a K-12 school.
  2. A low Year 7 fee can hide a dearer finish. Compare the Year 10 school plus its likely senior option against a K-12 school's six-year total, not Year 7 against Year 7.

Catholic fees vary by college in Tasmania

Catholic Education Tasmania does not set one fee for the state. Each college sets its own, and the nine Catholic schools in our tables range from $3,450 (St James, Cygnet) to $7,880 (St Virgil's, Austins Ferry). The common rule is the family discount: 10%, 20% or 30% off tuition for families with three, four or five or more children at any Tasmanian Catholic school. Capital levies are billed per family at each school.

What's around the schools

School choice is also a choice about after-school life. In our Kids' Activity Index, Tasmania's busiest suburbs for listed kids' activities are Launceston (10), North Hobart and Devonport (7 each), Glenorchy (6) and Kingston (5). No Tasmanian suburb lists more than 10, so a school's own sport, music and outdoor program carries real weight. The Kingston area alone has three private schools in our tables: Calvin Christian, Southern Christian and Tarremah Steiner at Huntingfield. Browse everything near you in kids' activities across Tasmania.

Boarding in Tasmania

Three schools in our tables publish a boarding fee for 2026: The Hutchins School ($27,720 for seven-day boarding, on top of day fees), St Michael's Collegiate ($25,180 for seven-day boarding, on top of day fees) and Launceston Church Grammar ($23,100 for six or seven nights, listed separately from day fees). For girls' boarding options across the country, see our girls' boarding schools list.

What we don't rank

This post orders schools by fee and nothing else. We don't rank schools on NAPLAN, ATAR or "best". A higher fee buys facilities, class sizes and programs, not a guarantee of results. For each school's details, start with its AroundSchools profile and the My School website.
