Australia's senior secondary education varies by state, with Victoria's VCE and NSW's HSC being the two largest systems. Understanding these pathways is crucial for families considering interstate moves or comparing educational options.

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

The VCE is typically completed over two years (Years 11 and 12) and offers:

  • Over 90 subjects including VCE VET programs
  • Flexibility to complete over 2-3 years
  • Study scores ranging from 0-50 for each subject
  • ATAR calculation based on best subjects

Higher School Certificate (HSC)

The HSC in NSW provides:

  • Wide range of Board Developed and Board Endorsed courses
  • Minimum of 10 units of study
  • Band performance descriptors (Band 1-6)
  • ATAR eligibility with specific course requirements

Key Differences

  • Assessment structure and timing
  • Scaling and ATAR calculation methods
  • Subject offerings and specialisations
  • University prerequisite subjects

Alternative Pathways

Both systems offer alternative routes including:

  • Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses
  • School-based apprenticeships and traineeships
  • VCAL in Victoria (being phased out)
  • Life Skills courses in NSW
