Choose a school holiday swimming program by your child's current skill level, the lesson minutes you can actually attend and the full cost of getting to the pool. A five-day intensive and a three-session stroke clinic can serve different needs. Ask the swim school to match the course to your child before paying, then confirm the timetable and adult supervision requirements.
This guide helps you choose and book an intensive. For the wider state-program overview, use our summer swimming lessons guide.
Provider dates, prices and conditions checked on their own pages on 12 October 2026. A published program does not guarantee a place; confirm availability when booking.
Key takeaways
- Match the child's present ability to the class. Age eligibility alone does not establish the right level.
- Compare total lesson minutes alongside the price. Add entry, spectator charges and travel before choosing.
- Check whether sessions run daily or on selected days, and whether your regular lessons continue.
- Plan adult supervision. Ask who must stay poolside during lessons and what happens before and after class.
Choose an intensive by three usable measures
Right level
Check the class matches the child’s current ability.
Teaching minutes
Sessions × minutes gives the actual lesson time.
Family timetable
Include travel, supervision and any usual weekly class.
An intensive is not all-day care and does not promise a fixed learning outcome.
AroundSchools editorial checklist; confirm program conditions with each provider.
Summer booking note: the Heidelberg and Gosnells examples below have published January 2027 courses. Confirm the suitable level, session time and current availability before paying.
Start with a skill goal
Choose a goal: starting lessons, returning after a break or practising a particular technique. Describe what your child can do independently and where they need support. Bring their latest certificate and ask how it maps to the school’s levels.
An intensive does not promise a level promotion. Ask how progress is assessed and what the teacher recommends afterwards. Building water confidence and practising breaststroke need different instruction.
Provider course names illustrate that difference. Sydney City Leisure offers group classes, private one-to-one classes and targeted skills clinics. Dipadees in Brisbane separates its Fast Track program, for Beginner through Arms levels, from stroke clinics for Breathers 1 and above. Ask about the actual content instead of comparing the word “intensive” across websites.
Check the week your family can attend
School holiday dates help narrow the search, but each provider sets its own course dates. Check our Victoria school holidays resource or WA school holidays resource, then confirm the swim school's exact schedule.
Consider the journey every lesson day: travel, parking, changing, the lesson and getting dressed afterwards. Check whether a nearby lesson or a longer course across town fits your schedule. Check whether siblings can attend compatible times, and whether the supervising adult can stay throughout.
Some programs run Monday to Friday; others use selected weekdays. Public holidays can change the number of lessons. Before paying, ask whether you can attend the full block, how missed classes are treated and whether the advertised time is confirmed or a provisional window.
Four real examples to compare
These examples compare course structures and booking questions.
Sydney: choose the class type before requesting a time
City of Sydney Leisure's holiday intensives include group lessons, private one-to-one lessons and targeted skills clinics. Its current page directs parents to submit an enquiry, speak to reception or call 1300 198 412. The Help Desk can discuss available times and help if you are unsure of the level.
Request the next intake's dates, full quote and class timetable before arranging work leave or other holiday activities.
Melbourne: a daily block in Heidelberg
Learn to Swim Victoria's holiday program lists daily 40-minute lessons over five consecutive Monday-to-Friday days, for children 3.5 years and older, across ability levels. Its Heidelberg location is 118 Cape Street.
Published January 2027 blocks are 4–8 January, 11–15 January and 18–22 January. Five 40-minute lessons total 200 minutes. Use the provider's enrolment or enquiry link to confirm the suitable level, exact time, price and available places.
Brisbane: selected weekdays and two course types
Dipadees in Everton Hills lists holiday programs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, over two blocks. Stroke clinics cost $25 per class, with published 8–9am sessions. Fast Track costs $75 per block, with 30-minute lesson slots.
The page asks families to watch for the next holiday dates. Enquire before assuming a block is available. Its normal weekly lessons continue during school holidays, and holiday clinics are additional. Check your existing enrolment so you understand the combined schedule and cost.
Perth: compare two Gosnells holiday blocks
Leisure World in the City of Gosnells publishes a January 2027 holiday program with enrolments opening in September 2026. Block 1 runs 4–15 January 2027, with 10 days for $126 per student. Block 2 runs 18–29 January 2027, with 9 days for $113.40. Class times are available between 8am and noon, with learn-to-swim classes from 3.5 years through to adults.
The council's page says payment is required on enrolment and its fee includes child entry and one spectator. Ask the swim school to confirm the class length, level, inclusions and cancellation conditions for the block you choose. A start-time range is not the same thing as a confirmed class time. Use the official booking link or contact the centre, rather than assuming a directory listing reserves a place.
Calculate the full cost and lesson time
Use this calculation: total lesson minutes = number of lessons × minutes per lesson. Then divide the course fee by total teaching hours, if the provider publishes both the session count and duration. If it publishes only the days, compare cost per scheduled lesson day and ask for the missing lesson length. Neither calculation measures teacher quality, class size or individual attention.
Gosnells offers a useful example. Its two January blocks have different headline prices, but the same calculated cost per scheduled lesson day:
| Gosnells January option | Published dates | Scheduled lesson days | Course fee per student | Calculated fee per lesson day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Block 1 | 4–15 January 2027 | 10 | $126 | $12.60 |
| Block 2 | 18–29 January 2027 | 9 | $113.40 | $12.60 |
$126 ÷ 10 = $12.60; $113.40 ÷ 9 = $12.60. The lower block fee pays for one fewer scheduled day. The total price difference is $12.60, rather than a lower price per lesson day. These are our calculations from the council's published schedule, not a comparison of teaching outcomes.
Gosnells: both blocks cost the same per scheduled lesson day
Block 1: 10 days
$12.60 / lesson day
Block 2: 9 days
$12.60 / lesson day
$126 ÷ 10 = $12.60; $113.40 ÷ 9 = $12.60. Ask about lesson duration; this does not compare teaching quality.

Compare lesson minutes separately. Heidelberg's five 40-minute lessons provide 200 minutes of scheduled teaching. Gosnells' program page lists course days and prices, so ask the centre about the lesson duration before making an hourly comparison. Do not treat two programs with the same number of days as equal teaching time.
Add travel, parking, any extra spectators and other charges to the course quote. Check which entry fees are included and ask about siblings. The course that fits your child's level and your full attendance schedule is the one worth comparing; a cheap missed lesson is not a useful saving.
Plan supervision before the first lesson
Ask the provider what the supervising adult must do during the lesson. Also check the rules for recreational swimming before or afterwards. Do not assume an intensive is a drop-off holiday-care program.
Royal Life Saving's Keep Watch guidance says active supervision remains the responsibility of parents and carers even when lifeguards are present. At public pools, it recommends staying within arm's reach for ages 0–5 and non-swimmers; staying close with constant visual contact for ages 6–10 and weak swimmers; and maintaining visual contact for ages 11–14.
Prepare towels and dry clothes first, give the child your full attention and follow the centre's supervision rules. Lessons support skill development; continue supervising according to the child's ability and the setting.
Your booking checklist
Before you pay, get answers to these questions:
- Which class fits my child's current skills, and is an assessment needed?
- What are the exact dates, lesson minutes and confirmed start times?
- What is the total charge, including pool and spectator entry?
- Must an adult remain on deck, and can sibling arrangements work?
- What happens if we miss a lesson or the provider changes the course?
- Are regular lessons continuing, and is this booking an additional charge?
- What support or access arrangements should we discuss before the first day?
Save the confirmation and conditions; recheck times before starting.
Find nearby options and plan the next step
Browse kids' activities to shortlist nearby swim schools, then contact each provider about its holiday intake. Our Kids Activity Index explains the directory's coverage; being listed does not establish holiday availability.
For more local options, see State Swim School in Hillarys and Paul Sadler Swimland in Wendouree. These are directory starting points: contact the provider about suitable lessons and current holiday availability.
For further planning, read the summer swimming programs guide, check kids' activity vouchers by state, and explore activities for kids who don't like sport.
Frequently asked questions
Does a holiday intensive replace weekly lessons?
Ask your provider. Dipadees explicitly says its holiday clinics are additional to weekly lessons, which continue through holidays. Other providers may arrange their programs differently.
Can I choose the lesson time before booking?
Ask the provider which start times are confirmed. Gosnells publishes a morning range for its holiday classes, while Sydney City Leisure asks parents to enquire about available times. Save the confirmation showing your child's actual class time before arranging other commitments.
Is the cheapest fee the best value?
Compare the suitable level, total minutes, full attendance and total household cost. The published fee alone cannot tell you which teacher or course suits your child.
Can my child move up a level after one week?
Ask how the provider assesses progress. Choose a realistic skill goal and let the teacher advise the next step; do not book on the assumption of a guaranteed promotion.
