Sport, Music and All-Rounder Scholarships at Australian Private Schools (2028 Entry)
10 October 2026
Last verified: 11 October 2026. Scholarship availability, eligibility requirements, award values and application deadlines may change. Always confirm details directly with the school before applying.
Sport, music, arts and all-rounder scholarships reward a talent rather than a test score alone, and 35 of the 62 largest independent schools in Australia's capitals publish at least one. We read the scholarship pages of the eight largest independent secondary schools in every capital (six in Darwin) on 9 October 2026. All-rounder and music awards are the most common; sport and the arts are much rarer. The bar is specific: a Year 7 music scholarship asks for anything from AMEB Grade 4 to a diploma on piano, and most sport scholarships want state-level representation. Every school billing $30,000 or more publishes at least one of these awards; only one of the 15 billing under $10,000 does.
Key takeaways
- 35 of 62 schools publish a non-academic scholarship. 26 run an all-rounder or general excellence award, 25 a music award, 14 a sport award and 12 a performing or visual arts award. Four publish all four kinds: Pymble Ladies' College, Caulfield Grammar, Canberra Girls Grammar and John Paul College.
- They cluster at the dear end. All 18 schools billing $30,000 or more publish at least one, against 1 of the 15 billing under $10,000.
- The music bar runs from Grade 4 to a diploma. A Year 7 pianist needs Grade 4 at Barker and Westminster, Grade 6 at Pymble, Prince Alfred, Pembroke and Canberra Grammar, Grade 8 at Trinity and Caulfield, and the AMusA diploma at Knox.
- Sport usually means state level. Pymble, Churchie, Caulfield and John Paul College ask for state or national representation.
- Many still make your child sit the academic test. Knox says plainly: "APPLICANTS FOR ALL SCHOLARSHIPS, INCLUDING MUSIC, MUST SIT THE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION." Caulfield's music awards are a rare exception.
- The first 2028 deadline is close. Caulfield's music scholarships close on Monday 19 October 2026, with auditions on 7 and 10 November.

Which kind of scholarship fits your child?
Schools use four kinds of non-academic award, and each one tests something different.
- Music rewards a standard you can prove: an AMEB grade (or equivalent) on a named instrument, then an audition. Most also want the child to join ensembles and keep up lessons.
- Sport rewards a level of competition, usually state or national representation, and a commitment to play for the school.
- Performing and visual arts cover drama, dance and art, judged by audition, video or a folio of work.
- All-rounder or general excellence awards look for a child who is strong at school and active in other areas, such as sport, the arts, leadership or service. They are the most common kind, and the hardest to prepare for in a hurry.
Only some schools offer each kind, and the same name can mean different things. Carey's "General Excellence Scholarships" are for sport only; Haileybury's Excellence Scholarships weigh "leadership, community service, sport and the arts". Read the criteria line before the name.
Music scholarships: the grade you need
Music is the most specific scholarship to aim for, because schools publish the grade they expect. The table below is the piano minimum for Year 7 entry, with each school's other instruments in the note.

So what: the bar for the same award runs from Grade 4 to a diploma, and orchestral instruments usually need a lower grade than piano.
Each school’s own scholarship page or guidelines, read 9 October 2026 (Pembroke: 2027 guidelines) · aroundschools.com.au
Three patterns are worth knowing before your child's next exam:
- Orchestral instruments need a lower grade than piano. Knox asks for the AMusA diploma on piano but Grade 5 on wind and brass; Christ Church Grammar asks for Grade 5 piano but Grade 2 on woodwind and brass. Schools need players for their ensembles, and some say so: Churchie says applications from trumpet, tuba, French horn, bassoon, violin, viola or double bass players "are actively encouraged".
- Voice is treated differently. Pymble says "We do not accept vocal submissions" for its Year 7 music award, and Penleigh and Essendon's terms for 2027 entry did not consider voice before Year 9. Caulfield has a separate voice scholarship from AMEB Grade 3.
- Grades are a gate, not the decision. Shortlisted children audition, usually with two contrasting pieces, and many schools add sight-reading, an aural test and an interview.
| School | Music award | Value | 2028 key date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caulfield Grammar | Instrumental (Years 5, 7, 9, 10) and voice (Years 7, 9, 10) | Typically 25% to 75%, plus a lesson allowance | Closes Mon 19 Oct 2026; auditions 7 and 10 Nov |
| Knox Grammar | Music, Year 7 | 50% to 100% of tuition | 9 Nov 2026 to Thu 4 Feb 2027; exam Sun 21 Feb 2027 |
| Canberra Grammar | Musical Excellence, one award, Year 7 | 20% of tuition to Year 12 | Registration closes Sun 15 Nov 2026 |
| Newington College | Music, Years 7, 9, 11 | Full or partial tuition, plus a lesson subsidy | Opens mid-November 2026 |
| Hale School | Music, Years 7 to 11 | Ask the school | Fri 20 Nov 2026 to Wed 3 Feb 2027; auditions 4 and 5 Mar |
| Christ Church Grammar | Council Music, Year 7 | 50% of tuition plus lessons on two instruments | Opens late Nov 2026; exam Sat 20 Feb 2027 |
| Penleigh and Essendon | Excellence in Music, Years 7 to 11 | Tuition remission plus lessons on up to two instruments (2027 terms) | Tue 1 Dec 2026 to Wed 10 Feb 2027 |
| Westminster School | Fricker Music, Year 7 | 50% of tuition to Year 12 | Closes Fri 15 Jan 2027 |
| Prince Alfred College | Music, Year 7 | Ask the school (most awards 50%) | Registrations close 4pm Thu 21 Jan 2027 |
| Concordia College | Music, Years 7 to 12 | Tuition remission "based on ability" | Closes 11.30pm Thu 21 Jan 2027 |
| St Peters Lutheran College | Excellence in Music, from Year 7 | Ask the school; no 100% awards | Closes Wed 3 Feb 2027 |
| Barker College | Music, Year 7, up to two | 50% to 100%, plus lessons up to $5,000 a year | Opens Term 4 2026; test Thu 18 Feb 2027 |
| Brisbane Grammar School | Cultural (art, drama or music), Years 7 to 11 | Depends on the family's financial circumstances | Closes Fri 18 Jun 2027 |
Some music rounds have already gone: Pymble's page says "Applications closed for Year 7 2028", and Churchie's music excellence page shows applications as closed.
If your child is a beginner, look for lesson-only awards. Scotch College in Perth offers up to six Music Fellowships a year that cover the music lessons on an allocated instrument to Year 12, and its page says they "do not require students to sit an academic entrance examination". St Stephen's School's instrumental awards "cover music tuition fees only", and its Instrument of Need awards name the instruments the school is short of. These do not reduce school fees, but they open the door for a child who has not yet reached the grade for a full music scholarship.
Sport scholarships: what "state level" means
Almost every sport scholarship we read asks for representative competition, and most say state level or higher.
- Pymble Ladies' College offers "a small number" of Performance Scholarships for sport, for Years 7 to 11 in 2028, to candidates "competing at national or state level". Applications open in November 2026.
- Churchie offers GPS Sporting Excellence Scholarships of "up to 100 percent remission of fees" to boys "currently excelling at a state level or higher".
- Caulfield Grammar runs a sport stream of its General Excellence awards for Years 9 to 11, for State or National level in an APS sport, with the scholarship test on Saturday 13 February 2027.
- Carey Baptist Grammar offers its General Excellence Scholarships for sport only, at Years 7, 10 and 11, usually 50% of tuition. Reviews for 2028 start on Monday 12 October 2026, and shortlisted applicants sit Edutest after an interview.
- Ivanhoe Grammar's Peter Rule Sports Scholarship gives 50% of tuition to two students entering Year 10.
- Brisbane Grammar School counts chess and debating among its 12 GPS activities for sports scholarships, alongside rowing, rugby and the rest; applications for 2028 close on Friday 18 June 2027.
- John Paul College's 2028 round is open now, and its sport award asks for state or national competition.
- John Septimus Roe in Perth offers 10 basketball scholarships a year, preferring players from Division 1 WABL or higher.
Two caveats. Concordia College's sports scholarship, worth up to 60% of tuition from Year 10, is currently open for 2027 entry and closes on 30 October 2026, so a 2028 round has not been published. And Sirius College's sport award, worth 45% of tuition, is for Year 9 entry only.
Our Kids' Activity Index lists 7,833 sport activities across Australia, and our guides to junior pathways explain how children reach representative level in Auskick, NetSetGO, Aussie Hoops and Little Athletics.
Performing and visual arts scholarships
Twelve schools publish an award for drama, dance or art, and each asks for evidence you can show.
- Pymble Ladies' College: Performing Arts (dance, drama or voice) for Years 7 to 11 in 2028, opening in November 2026 and closing in February 2027, with a 10-minute audition.
- Caulfield Grammar: Dance, Theatre and Visual Arts for Years 10 and 11, typically 25% to 50%, with a solo video or a folio of four pieces, plus the scholarship test.
- Westminster School: the Fricker Dance Scholarship, 50% of tuition from Year 7, by an audition class where "No prepared solo is required"; closes Friday 15 January 2027.
- John Septimus Roe: up to five Specialist Dance scholarships a year for Year 9.
- St Michael's Collegiate: Performing, Visual Arts and Design scholarships for Years 5 to 7, with a folio of four to six pieces; 2028 applications open in Term 4.
- Canberra Girls Grammar: Gabriel Foundation Scholarships for the arts at 25% of tuition, alongside music and sport.
- Brisbane Grammar School: Cultural Scholarships for art, drama or music, closing Friday 18 June 2027.
Barker's creative-arts award is a subject scholarship worth 25% of academic tuition, judged on a portfolio. The Hutchins School's School of Performing Arts scholarships reach up to 50%, but its page shows only 2027-entry details so far.
All-rounder and general excellence scholarships
This is the most common kind, offered by 26 of the 62 schools, and the bar ranges from "good at school plus one thing" to exceptional on every front.
- The broadest: Pymble's All-rounder Scholarship expects "Stanine 8 – 9 in all testing categories" and competition at state or national level. Caulfield's General Excellence awards want evidence in at least three of four fields: academic, leadership and service, sport, and the arts.
- Up to full tuition: Knox's All-Rounder Scholarship, for "all-round attainment in all areas of school life", runs from 50% to 100% of tuition at Year 7. Newington's General Excellence and All-Rounder awards cover full or partial tuition.
- Up to half: Concordia's Excellence Scholarship is 50% of tuition for up to six years, closing 21 January 2027. Scotch College Adelaide's Excellence Scholarships pay up to 50% of the day fee for "an elite level of proficiency" in sport, dance, drama or music, open 12 October 2026 to 18 January 2027. Westminster offers up to 50% from Year 7 and up to 30% at Year 6.
- Leadership-led: John Septimus Roe's Terry Hann scholarships give 50% of tuition to 20 students a year who join from another school in Year 7. St Stephen's School's Community Excellence awards need a handwritten letter, a reference and an interview, with no test; 2028 applications open on 2 November 2026.
- Opening later: Haileybury's Excellence Scholarships for Years 5, 7 and 10 open on Monday 15 February 2027, and Penleigh and Essendon's General Excellence awards on Monday 1 March 2027. Ivanhoe's open on Monday 12 October 2026.
St Peter's College in Adelaide runs its general excellence awards as means-tested scholarships: its Year 10 award for 2028 is 70% of tuition, for "an outstanding student who would be unable to attend St Peter's College without significant financial support".
Will my child also have to sit the academic test?
Often, yes, and it is the step families miss. Register for the scholarship exam even if your child is applying on music or sport, unless the school says otherwise.
- Academic test required as well: Knox (every scholarship, including music), Barker ("All applicants for any scholarship must sit the examination"), Christ Church Grammar's music award (exam on 20 February 2027), Caulfield's general excellence, sport and arts awards, Pymble's all-rounder award, Canberra Grammar's music award, Canberra Girls Grammar's Gabriel scholarships, and Carey's sport award after interview.
- Explicitly no academic test: Caulfield's music scholarships ("apart from Music, Humanitarian and Indigenous Scholarship applicants") and Scotch College Perth's Music Fellowships.

Levies, uniforms and camps are usually extra, and some schools charge an acceptance fee when a scholarship is taken up: Prince Alfred College's is $1,250.
The dearer the school, the likelier a talent scholarship
This is the pattern nobody publishes. Talent scholarships are almost entirely a feature of the higher-fee schools.

At the low-fee end the help, if any, looks different. Calvin and Emmanuel Christian Schools in Hobart offer an Extend grant of "Up to $3,000 per year" for development in sport, music or the arts, rather than a fee remission. Sirius College's sport, arts and music awards are for Year 9 only. If a lower-fee school is your choice, ask what it offers for a talented child; the answer is often lessons, coaching or a place in a program rather than a scholarship. If the question is affordability rather than talent, our guide to private school bursaries covers the means-tested help at the same 62 schools.

Frequently asked questions
What AMEB grade do you need for a music scholarship? For Year 7 entry, the piano minimum we read ranged from Grade 4 (Barker and Westminster) to the AMusA diploma (Knox), with Grade 6 the most common. Orchestral instruments usually need lower grades: Grade 2 to 6 for woodwind and brass, most often Grade 4 or 5.
Do sport scholarships need state representation? At most schools, yes. Pymble, Churchie, Caulfield and John Paul College ask for state or national level, and Carey for representative, state or national level. Brisbane Grammar also counts chess and debating among its GPS activities.
What is an all-rounder scholarship? An award for a child who does well at school and contributes in other areas, such as sport, the arts, leadership or service. It is the most common non-academic scholarship, published by 26 of the 62 schools, and usually needs the academic test as well.
Are sport and music scholarships means-tested? Most are merit awards. Some consider finances: Brisbane Grammar's sport and cultural awards vary with "the family's financial circumstances", Caulfield's general excellence offers "consider family's financial means", and St Peter's College in Adelaide means-tests its general excellence awards.
When should we apply for 2028 entry? Now for some: Caulfield's music round closes on 19 October 2026 and Canberra Grammar's on 15 November 2026. Most other music, sport and all-rounder rounds run from November 2026 to February 2027, with Brisbane Grammar's open to 18 June 2027.

How we checked. The 62 schools are the eight largest independent secondary schools by enrolment around each capital (six in Darwin), selected from AroundSchools school data, the same selection as our capital-city fee index. On 9 October 2026 we read each school's own scholarship pages and guideline PDFs, and quote their wording. Where a school's page shows only last year's round, we print no 2028 date for it.
