How school zones work in Queensland
Three things to understand before you rely on a zone.
Find a Queensland school catchment
EdMap lets you search by home address or school name. Queensland’s local state school is generally determined by the shortest, most direct road route to the school’s main entrance. Check primary and secondary boundaries separately.
School Enrolment Management Plans
Schools close to capacity can use a School Enrolment Management Plan to manage enrolments. The school’s plan explains its catchment, capacity, enrolment criteria and residency evidence. Read the specific plan before applying.
Out-of-catchment applications
You can apply outside the catchment, but a place is not guaranteed. Schools must retain capacity for local students, including families moving into the area during the year. Ask the school about its waiting list and current arrangements.
Moving home? Check the exact address first
Compare each prospective home address rather than relying on a suburb, postcode or property advertisement. Record the matching schools, then ask each school about your intended year level, start date and required documents. A nearby school is not necessarily the school serving that address.
- Keep the full address, lookup date and selected enrolment year together.
- If the address is near a boundary, cannot be found or has an unknown data year, check the official map again.
- Compare the same year levels when reviewing school information, fees and nearby activities.

Our checker holds the 2026 state primary and secondary catchments. What we hold for each state was checked on 18 October 2026.
Living inside a zone makes this your designated local public school. Whether a place is offered depends on the state’s enrolment policy and the year you apply — it is not a guarantee, and where current students live does not define the boundary. Verify the latest details with the education department and the school.
