How school zones work in Victoria
Three things to understand before you rely on a zone.
Choose the enrolment year first
Find My School is Victoria’s official school-zone map. Enter your permanent address, choose the enrolment year and select the school type. It shows zones for the current and following school years; a boundary can change between years.
Melbourne and regional school zones
In Melbourne, Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong, the local government school is usually the nearest by straight-line distance. In other Victorian areas, the shortest practical road route generally applies. Use the official zone rather than measuring distance yourself.
Local schools and applications outside the zone
Eligible children have the right to attend their designated local school. Out-of-zone applications depend on available places and the department’s Placement Policy. Some specialist, selective, language and flexible-learning schools do not use ordinary local zones.
Moving home? Check the exact address first
Compare each prospective home address rather than relying on a suburb, postcode or property advertisement. Record the matching schools, then ask each school about your intended year level, start date and required documents. A nearby school is not necessarily the school serving that address.
- Keep the full address, lookup date and selected enrolment year together.
- If the address is near a boundary, cannot be found or has an unknown data year, check the official map again.
- Compare the same year levels when reviewing school information, fees and nearby activities.
