High school from a city address

A family in the city is working from two lists that run on different rules: the government high schools, where the address decides, and the non-government ones, where the application does.

The government list: one zone, two schools

Adelaide High School and Adelaide Botanic High School — the newer of the two, on Frome Road beside the Botanic Garden (Wikipedia) — share a single intake zone, the first shared zone in South Australia when it was announced (ABC News). A family living inside it nominates a preferred school, and when demand runs past the places available, students are shared between the two (Adelaide Botanic High School).

Three things follow for a parent:

  • The boundary moves. Suburbs were taken out of the zone in one redraw (ABC News) and restored in a later one (Adelaide High School). Check the current map, not last year's.
  • The postcode is not the answer. The Department for Education's zone finder takes a street address and returns the zone for it — the schools' own pages point families there.
  • Inside the zone means priority, not a guarantee. Zoned schools give priority to children living in the zone, subject to capacity (Department for Education).

None of these uses a zone: zoning is a government-school system, and independent and Catholic schools set their own enrolment policies (Kiddo).
