East Melbourne, VIC Family Guide

Families living in or beside the Melbourne CBD are usually solving one particular problem: there is no backyard. What the inner city hands back is public, and most of it is free — which is the right place to start, because it is also the part you can try on a Saturday without committing to a term.

Exhaust the free layer first

Within 5 km of East Melbourne the directory holds 131 parks and playgrounds and 43 libraries.

The one on East Melbourne's own doorstep is the Fitzroy Gardens playground at the corner of Clarendon and Grey Streets, which has a dragon slide that glows in the dark, a giraffe-shaped swing and a large sandpit, with shaded seating and public toilets beside it. The same gardens hold the Fairies' Tree, carved out of an old red gum by the artist Ola Cohn, and the City of Melbourne runs free storytime and song sessions across its library branches.

Parks here where we know what is actually in them

Those rows are filtered down to the ones where we hold the detail — toilets, a playground, courts, picnic tables. With small children that list is the whole difference between an afternoon out and a false start.

Then the part you pay for

An inner-city radius is dense enough that the shortlist problem flips: the constraint stops being what exists and starts being what fits around a tram timetable and a working week.

Try one of each this weekend

Pick one park from the first table and one listing from the second, and do the free one first. A Saturday in a park with toilets and a playground tells you more about whether your child will sit still for a term of lessons than any brochure does. When you are ready to book, open the listing and ask whether they run a trial class. The Victorian activities hub covers the rest of the city, and the Victorian school pages show what the schooling around here looks like.
