A Catholic school near the CBD? Start at the north end of the bridge

If you work in the city and want a Catholic school on the way, Milsons Point deserves a look. It is the first stop north of the Harbour Bridge. A cluster of Catholic colleges sits within 2 km of it, and another is back across the bridge in the city. They are not all run the same way, though, and that changes how you apply, what you pay and who they take.

Two kinds of Catholic school

Catholic schools in NSW come in two models, as Catholic Schools NSW sets out (source). Systemic schools are run by the diocese; around here that is Sydney Catholic Schools. Congregational schools are run by a religious order or its ministry body, and each one handles its own enrolment and fees. Here is how the schools near Milsons Point split:

The part older lists get wrong

Both Sydney Catholic Schools colleges in that table used to be boys' schools, and both have changed. Marist Catholic College North Shore was formed when St Mary's Catholic Primary North Sydney combined with Marist College North Shore, and girls were then accepted into Year 7 (Sydney Catholic Schools). It now runs a K-6 campus on Ridge Street and a Years 7–12 campus on Miller Street. St Mary's Cathedral College has started enrolling girls as well as boys in its youngest years and is building towards a co-educational K-12 school (Sydney Catholic Schools). Some listings still show both as boys only, including older rows in our own directory. The colleges' own sites are the current word.

For a family with a son and a daughter, that matters. Marist North Shore is the co-educational choice here. The independent colleges nearby each take either boys or girls.

How applying differs

• Sydney Catholic Schools: apply online and list two schools in order of preference. Kindergarten applications go in the year before starting. Year 7 applications go in while your child is in Year 5 (enrolment). There is no single fee list: each school publishes its own fees, made up of tuition, school-based fees and a building levy per family (fees).
• Independent colleges: apply to the college itself. Monte, for example, takes online applications in order of receipt, with no entrance exam or interview (Monte enrolments). Loreto publishes its fees with reductions for second and later daughters (Loreto fees).
