That changes how a family here goes about choosing a high school. A government high school is allocated by zone; a private one is chosen, applied to and paid for, school by school.

• Pulteney Grammar School, independent, in the city
• Christian Brothers College, Catholic, in the city
• St Aloysius College, Catholic, in the city

How choosing one works

Start with a search, then a visit. The Association of Independent Schools of SA lets parents search its member schools by location, gender, religious affiliation and year levels, and suggests visiting before you decide, a visit every school should welcome.

Expect a wide spread of fees. Independent Schools Australia describes a sector with a wide range of fee levels and many religious traditions, so two independent colleges can differ a great deal on price.

Ask about fee relief. South Australia's means-tested School Card is built for government schools, but each non-government school decides whether to use its income test when granting fee relief, so it is worth asking the colleges on your list.

Keep the public option in view. For comparison, the Department's zone finder shows which government high school is local to your address.
