Childcare per day in Prahran: start from a fee someone actually publishes

A Melbourne-wide average says little about the centre you would actually use. The more useful number is a real centre's fee, and Prahran has one in plain view: Stonnington Council runs its own early years services, and Princes Close Early Years Service, in Prahran itself, publishes its full-day fee on the council site. It sets one rate for younger children and a slightly lower one for older children, and the day includes morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and a late snack. The council's early years services page lists the centres it runs.

From the published fee to what you pay per day

A centre's daily fee is the price before any subsidy. To turn it into your family's day rate:

• Put that daily fee and your family income into the Child Care Subsidy calculator on Starting Blocks.
• Do the same for the other centres you are considering: Starting Blocks compares services by fees, vacancies and quality ratings, so you can line up private and community centres against the council one.
• If your child is in a funded kinder program inside long day care, Victoria's Free Kinder reduces the fee as an annual offset on your invoices, with no income test. Princes Close runs an integrated funded kinder program.

Run every shortlisted centre through the calculator, not only the council one: the subsidy and the kinder offset are what turn a published fee into your cost.
