Armadale, VIC Family Guide

In Armadale, a school zone belongs to an address, not a kind of home

It is easy to think of a school zone in terms of houses. The rule does not. In Victoria a child's local school is set by the school zone they live in, and eligible children living in the zone have the right to attend it (Victorian Government: school zones). The rule is about where you live, not whether it is a house, a townhouse or a flat.

That matters around Armadale, because the two kinds of home sell for very different amounts:

The last column divides the house median by the unit median for each suburb, from the same quarter of official sales. Read it as the price of a back yard: a unit and a house inside the same zone boundary carry the same entitlement.

What a school actually checks

A school confirms where the child lives. Prahran High School in Windsor, a government secondary college close to Armadale, sets out the Department's placement priority in its published policy: students living in its zone are guaranteed a place, decided on their permanent residential address, and other applicants are ranked by a sibling at the same address first, then by how close they live (Prahran High School enrolment policy).

Two things follow for a family weighing a move:

• Distance still counts from outside. Among out-of-zone applicants without a sibling at the school, the closer home ranks first, so an address just over the line is not the same as one across the suburb.
• Zones move. A small number may change each year, so check with your child's start year selected in Find my School, not this year's map.

Armadale Primary School is the government primary in the suburb itself; the same tool shows whether a given address is in its zone.

Zones decide the government bar only. The independent and Catholic schools around Armadale set their own enrolment.
